JOIN US IN MAKING A DIFFERENCE AND Supporting refugee families
Global Millennials for Progress is excited to partner with the International Rescue Committee in the launching of our Every Life Counts Campaign. Our goal is to provide direct support to global refugees so that they can survive, recover, and regain control of their future.
Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the IRC delivers lifesaving care to people fleeing conflict and natural disaster. The International Rescue Committee responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises and helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. The world's more than 60 million displaced people, the highest number ever recorded, require more than "aid as usual." Their growing and increasingly complex needs mandate a transformation - a creative rethinking - in the global humanitarian response.
REFUGEE CRISIS: Europe & Middle East
The civil war in Syria—now in its sixth year—has sparked the largest global displacement of people in recorded history. Afghans fleeing Taliban rule are the second largest group arriving in Europe.
In 2015, images of 3-year-old Alan Kurdi's lifeless body stranded on a Turkish beach focused the world’s attention on the brutal conflicts driving families to risk dangerous sea crossings to Europe. Closed borders have stalled 57,000 refugees in Greece.
Freezing temperatures are putting the lives and wellbeing of thousands of refugees stranded in Greece and the Balkans at risk. Children, the elderly and other vulnerable people may die on European soil this winter unless urgent action is taken.
What is the source of the crisis?
Since civil war exploded inside Syria in 2011, over 11 million people have fled their homes, with more than four million refugees sheltering in neighboring states that are struggling to support them. Several rounds of peace talks have failed to stop the fighting.
The ongoing violence in Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries in crisis has pushed over 1 million desperate people to seek safety and a new start in Europe. Most of the refugees have arrived on the islands of Greece. Lesbos alone has seen thousands of people a day land on its shores in dangerously overcrowded rubber rafts before pushing on to the continent.
Global Millennials for Progress is seeking to mobilize 1,000+ millennials and raise $10,000 to provide direct support to refugee families through the International Rescue Committee. If you are interested in taking direct actions that will support refugee families, please visit International Rescue Committee's site to learn more.
